Gullfoss

The Golden Falls — Iceland's most iconic waterfall — drops in two stages into a dramatic canyon on the Hvítá river, the mist catching the light in a way that gave the falls their name. For decades in the early twentieth century, Gullfoss was threatened with a hydroelectric dam; the farmer Sigríður Tómasdóttir walked to Reykjavik repeatedly to protest, and is credited with saving it for all future generations.
