One of the most vivid geological surprises in Iceland's highlands — a ridge of rhyolite stained brilliant emerald and olive by iron-rich minerals, rising from an otherwise barren landscape of grey lava and black ash. It sits within the Landmannalaugar geothermal area, where the earth's heat is so close to the surface that snow melts from the ground in winter.
