The Waterfall of the Gods marks one of the most pivotal moments in Icelandic history — it was here in the year 1000 that the lawspeaker Þorgeir threw his Norse idols into the falls after the "Alþingi" voted to adopt Christianity. The wide, curved curtain of water on the Skjálfandafljót river is as spectacular today as it was on that day.
