The glacier-capped stratovolcano that brought European aviation to a standstill in April 2010, when its eruption sent an ash plume 9 kilometres high and grounded flights across the continent for weeks. Below the ice, it is one of the most visually dramatic peaks on Iceland's South Coast — a sweeping, symmetrical summit above fertile farmland.
