Stuðlagil

Stuðlagil canyon was one of Iceland's best-kept secrets until the lowering of a reservoir upstream revealed the most spectacular concentration of basalt columns in the country — tall, perfectly hexagonal pillars lining the walls of a narrow gorge cut by the turquoise Jökla glacial river. The geometry of the columns, formed as ancient lava cooled and contracted with extraordinary regularity, creates a scene that looks more like architecture than nature.
